One reaction connects them: decarboxylation
Heat is the bridge between the two. When THCA is exposed to sufficient heat — from a lighter, a vaporizer coil, or an oven — it undergoes decarboxylation: the carboxyl group breaks off as carbon dioxide, and what remains is Delta-9 THC. This is why a freshly cured flower, which is rich in THCA, is chemically different from that same flower after it has been smoked or cooked. Why the difference matters legally
The legal framework treats these two compounds very differently. The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. A flower can carry a high THCA percentage and still fall within the federal hemp definition, provided its Delta-9 THC stays at or below 0.3% by dry weight.
